Objectives: The overall objective of the course is to enable students to characterize the microstructure of a material using both microscopy techniques and X-ray diffraction.
This skill should also enable students to understand and critically analyze the results obtained with these techniques in scientific and technical literature.
Pre-requirements: Basic knowledge in materials science (crystallography, crystalline structures et defects)
Educational content of the course:
Reminder of crystallography geometric and stereographic projection (4h CM)
Radiation/matter interaction et diffraction theory (6h CM)
Experimental methods (14h CM et 6h TD)

  • Transmission and scanning electron microscopes (SEM/TEM)
  • Castaing microprobe
  • Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and Wavelength dispersive Spectroscopy (WDS)
  • X-ray diffraction
  • Demonstration on the main device (Nancy/Metz site)
  • Grading method:

Written: Written exam
Internship training: Report
ORAL : Oral test
